Haute
Route
Day
3 Argentière Hut to Trient Hut map
Our
second day begins with a climb on skis of the Chardonnet Glacier to the
Col du Chardonnet. Now, high above and north of the Argentière Glacier
we can look back south to some of the most spectacular views on the tour.
To the north the slopes from the Col du Chardonnet drop away steeply at
about 45 degrees. After descending these on foot we reach the Saleina
Glacier which we cross easily to the Fenêtre de Saleina, another col.
Passing through this we reach the high Plateau du Trient which is crossed
to the Trient Hut.
Day
4 Trient Hut to Cabane du Mont Fort map
This
day is highlighted by one of the best downhill runs on the Haute Route.
The ski run down the Val D'Arpette into the town of Champex is fantastic,
beginning way up high amongst the rocks and glaciers and finishing up
winding its way through the beautiful forests above Champex. Champex is
a lovely Swiss village with wonderful views in all directions, located
on the shores of Lac du Champex. While in Champex we'll have time for
a meal and then we'll take local transportation (which is always so convenient
in Switzerland) to the ski resort of Verbier. This is the only time we
travel by road on the tour. At the ski area we'll take one of the lifts
which will allow us to easily access the Cabane du Mont Fort via one of
the area's downhill runs.
