Beginning
the long run back down to Pinkham Notch on the Gulf of Slides ski trail.
The Gulf of Slides is a fantastic area for backcountry skiing. The approach
up through the woods is not too long (about 1 and a half hours to the
floor of the Gulf) and the area offers superb ski runs, both steep and
not so steep. An added benefit to those on skis is that you can skin right
up to the top of the Gulf, never having to carry your skis. Also, it tends
not to be nearly as crowded as Tuckerman Ravine. However, it is somewhat
remote and parties must be self-sufficient and possess good skiing, route
finding, and avalanche skills.
